Welcome to the web-site of the 2025 Annual Conference of the European Consortium for Sociological Research. The event will be hosted by the Institute of Sociology and Social Psychology, at the University of Cologne, on September 3-5. The theme of the 2025 conference is "Demography and Social Inequality".
Demographic change constitutes one of the main challenges for contemporary societies. Improving our understanding of the mechanisms underlying sustained below replacement fertility, high levels of immigration, and steady increases in life expectancy is crucial for several reasons: To allow realistic projections of future demographic developments, to identify the implications of demographic change for welfare states and societies (specifically with regard to social inequalities and social cohesion), and to advise policy makers on how to transform demographic challenges into demographic opportunities.
The ESCR 2025 Conference thus aims to link population studies more closely with broader sociological research on social inequality and stratification. We are therefore looking forward to receiving submissions from a wider range of substantive fields, and, as hosts, to welcome many of you in September 2025 in Cologne!
